Paperwork Pushover

Everyday we seem to be drowning in the never ending wave of incoming paperwork! The end of the financial year is looming and it’s time to pick out the important bits and recycle the rest.

Let's start with the practicalities! You ARE going to have to keep some of it! No matter what your situation, paperwork falls into 3 main groups.

  1. The BUSINESS of YOU
  2. The FUN of YOU
  3. The HEART of YOU

Starting with the BUSINESS papers about YOU. These are bits of paper that provide proof:

  • paperwork for tax returns such as receipts & past documentation
  • insurance for the house, car, life, income protection
  • passports, marriage certificates, citizenship papers,
  • medical information & history, X-rays, reports
  • work/job related papers, your resume, qualifications, references

BUSINESS paperwork definitely belongs in a dedicated office space. You don't need a whole room! A spot under the stairs, a corner of your living room. Somewhere that when you go to it, you know you mean BUSINESS. This paperwork can usually be filed away and is therefore mostly 'archived' or 'passive' but you will definitely have some 'To Do's.

The next broad group is the FUN stuff about YOU. These are usually ideas and reference papers:

  • recipes
  • renovations
  • holidays
  • gifts

FUN paperwork should also be in with the other paperwork. Some of it can be filed away (archived for reference if necessary) but mostly it will be about 'current projects'.

Lastly, there is the leftover paperwork which is usually about the HEART of YOU! The emotional stuff that is difficult to let go of! It gets caught up with the other paperwork but it is an entirely different category.

  • love letters
  • birthday & Christmas cards
  • ticket stubs
  • your old report cards
  • your uni thesises (seriously, is that really a word? You SHOULD know if you've been to Uni! Please contact us here or report us to Grammerly!)
  • your B.A.G.A Award 4 (image thanks to http-//www.old-ledbury.co.uk)

HEART paperwork is memorabilia and should NOT be stored in with the other paperwork. Once you know how much memorabilia you want to keep, consider buying a really nice box that you can keep on a shelf with your books or on the top of your wardrobe & enjoy!
